SCR Clamps Much More Than an Afterthought
The chances are that if you’re looking at SCR devices, you are probably much more concerned with the device itself, the design, the capacity and the specifications, than you are about the SCR clamps you will need to hold it all together. In most cases, SCR clamps are almost an afterthought, just one more seemingly unimportant accessory, but that idea could not be more wrong. In reality, the clamps you use will determine both the effectiveness and the lifespan of your SCR device. They are actually an integral part of the successful functioning of SCR devices and unless you pick the right clamps and the right settings for those clamps, you could be in big trouble.
To really understand the importance of SCR clamps, you must understand how your SCR device functions and what role the clamps play in that functioning. Once you understand this, you will realize that the clamps are hardly an unimportant accessory. Rather they are a major part of the SCR device and provide a vital role to keep it running right.
Heat is the enemy of almost all electrical devices and SCR devices are no exception. In order to function properly and maintain a healthy, long lifespan, there must be an easy and effective way to reduce the internal heat that is generated by the operation of the SCR device. This is why the SCR device must have what’s known as a heat sink, which is attached to the base of the device and is designed to reduce the heat and keep the SCR device as cool as possible.
This is where the SCR clamps come in and this is why they are so important. The heat sink must be attached to the base of the SCR device and it must be attached in a very specific and precise way. Everything must be properly lined up. It cannot be done haphazardly, or approximately. It must be exact. The positioning must be exact and the amount of pressure exerted must also be exact, in order to assure the proper flow of both heat and electricity between the SCR base and the heat sink.
This is why it is so important to make sure that you not only choose the right SCR clamps, but that you know the exact amount of pressure that needs to be exerted. This will vary according to the size of the SCR device. The first thing you need to do is get the specifications from the SCR device manufacturer. You have to be sure that the clamps you use can exert adequate pressure to do the job properly. You must exert the proper amount of pressure recommended by the manufacturer in order to ensure that both the heatsink and the bus bars used to conduct electricity are in proper contact with the SCR device and will allow your circuit to operate as designed.
With the proper SCR clamps calibrated for the proper pressure, everything should run smoothly and your SCR device should have a long and profitable life. Without the proper clamps, calibrated to the right pressure as recommended by the manufacturer, you’re just letting yourself in for trouble.
